¿What is a desiccant and it's function?

Updated: Apr 11, 2019

A desiccant is a dehydrating agent which attracts moisture from the atmosphere. Absorbs and keeps water particles with it. The three most common types of desiccant are clay, silicon gel (silica) and molecular sieve.

¿What is a Clay desiccant?

Clay desiccants are non-hazardous substances that absorb moisture and are created through the drying of aluminosilicate clay with calcium (bentonite). This montmorillonite clay occurs in nature, has affinity to moisture, is chemically inert and is not corrosive. The layered structure of the clay desiccant attracts and absorbs moisture and keeps it trapped between its layers.

SiloSil® is the commercial name of the packaged clay (bags and envelopes) sold by Granterra. SiloSil® protects the contents of a properly sealed container during shipment and storage. For example, your product inside a sealed container will be in the same conditions as when it was initially packaged.

Clay is the cheapest and highly effective desiccant within a normal temperature and relative humidity range. It is frequently used in industry that requires moisture control. Clay can absorb up to 28% of its own weight in water vapor at 77 ° F (25 ° C) and 80% relative humidity. At maximum moisture vapor capacity, remains dry and solid. There is no apparent change in its size, shape or texture.

The clay works satisfactorily at temperatures below 120 ° F (49 ° C).
